Digging Deeper Into Reading Comp.: Valentine's & Character Traits

Reading Comprehension separates the boys from the men.
It is the difference between an independent reader, or a developing reader gaining that independence.

Reading Comp. is a skill that we as teachers continuously build, and relentlessly instill with a variety of techniques.

Digging Deeper Into Comprehension is another technique used with reading comprehension cards to develop comprehension skills through a buddy system, whole group, or small group instruction, with stories that GRAB their interest!

This is the,
Valentine Reading Comp. Card Set

Now, experience comprehension building through
Valentine's & Stories of Character!

This unit has building blocks to capture one's interest through stories of their choice, or classroom read alouds that CAPTURE their interest...
maps, plans, character descriptions, hard copy questions that match the cards so questions can be written as well as orally discussed, organizers, cause & effect, opinion...take a peek:

BIG difference once the interest is captured, and there is a new desire to learn more about a story.
Take a peek at student work:

These Reading Comp. Cards cover literature & foundational reading standards, all found in Common Core.

Forget a piece?
Don't worry, it's covered in the cards.
Simply read a story together, in guided reading groups, or for a whole group lesson.
We do all of the above.

We started with Franklin for this Valentine's week.  It's a wonderful book about Franklin forgetting his valentines.
The power of friendship & sharing are beautifully expressed in this book.

I Buddied kids up, let them share a pack of reading comp. cards, and roamed & listened to their conversations taking place...
IT WAS MAGICAL!  IT WAS AMAZING!

Here are some independent readers with a WONDERFUL book, Amelia Bedelia!

Look how serious they are...they're really DIGGING DEEPER!

The reading comprehension is not only taking place, but through conversations,
kids are DIGGING DEEPER!!
Love this book about friendship, & how we really need each other!

Character Traits Reading Comp. Cards:
We then read a GREAT book for not just Valentines, but for CHARACTER TRAITS!
The power of kind/hurtful words went a long way in this story, and the kids loved reading about them:

In  this unit, I have a separate pack of Character Traits Comp. Cards
that can be used anytime throughout the year!
The whole pack has
ALL CHARACTER TRAITS QUESTIONS
in them, aligned to Common Core of course!
Instilling truth, sharing, kindness, citizenship, giving, & polite manners are always at your fingertips with these cards, for any story!!

And of course, you know me,
Little Miss Organized has to put everything in its home, so Target had this great $1 basket:

Sharing what works!
Happy Reading, my friends!
