You're never going to believe it!
Today was supposed to be our first day back!
I did all the things a mama & teacher does to prepare for school for her class & family.
I would give you the laundry list, but you get the idea, so I'll spare you the details.
Then, the most wonderful thing happened.
I got a phone call last night that a water pipe broke, so school was cancelled.
Yes!! I said cancelled! Can you believe it??
I felt like a kid playing hooky.
I felt like the luckiest person, cause I wanted to finish up some units, so now I have more time!
Somehow the kids woke from a dead sleep,
must have dreamed the news, asked if they could stay up, so I said sure, why not?
So I worked, they watched & played, and we were all playing hooky, well sort of!
It was so fun!
'Till guess what happened the next morning?
Outside of the bright & early morning phone call from Poppy, hearing on tv there wasn't school, he had to let me know about it, and the 50 alarms that we forgot to shut off, there wasn't much sleep after staying up waaaaaaaaay past our bedtime.
Then, more good news came my way!
I got an email saying I just got 2 new students!
2 at the same time!
More great news:
there are no more desks
the copy machine is down
no toilets work due to a broken pipe
or running water for that matter
so don't bother coming to school to get prepared for them
Oh, dear, I am not stressed, I tell you.
'Cause I'm playing hooky today, that's why!
Yes, I can blog during school hours, and it's OK!!
Wow, can you tell I don't get out much?
Well, it's a good thing I am organized, or I would be a stress ball right about now.
For my new students, here's what waiting for me at school, all prepped for the three of us:
Yep. All ready to just add names.
The pirate's booty bag is for collecting gold coins in, when our behavior is not like that of a scallywagger.
And since the copy machine is down, and all computer access won't be ready to roll for new students, I can have them do:
Yep, that's right. Forget the listening
I use individual, CD players for books on CD.
Total concentration. Total focus. Total increase for fluency, vocab, & comp.
Love it, works like a dream.
This is truly one of my saving graces!
So, here's what I wanted to share with you about pencils.
Don't know about you, but in my class, pencils disappear like water.
Set some out in a center organizer for group time, and whoa! A week later, they have all magically disappeared.
I've tried the sharpie pen dots on them.
I've tried buying certain colors, decorative ones, (c'mon, it's me here), nope, some would still disappear.
So, my 8th grader son, told me a wonderful trick that his teacher did in the 5th grade, when all her pencils went vanishing.
My daughter who also had Mrs. P in the 3rd grade, tells me this, so now I'm going to try it out!
Duct Tape. For some simple clarity here, there is a decorative brand called Duck Tape, so both spellings are correct. There is duct tape, and Duck tape.
Anyhoo, cut & tape small decorative strips around tops of pencils. When some disappear, you will have 20 plus sets of eyeballs on the lookout for your pencils that have wandered from their home!
I use different kinds of duct/duck tape for different centers where I want the pencils to stay.
I don't want to waste time once we sit down at small groups & learning begins, because 20 pencils were put back into the wrong container, and 4 back in the other container, then you've just lost 10 minutes of teaching time, because 7 helpful kids jump up to go find the missing pencils that were put back into other trays. And when the pencils aren't in that try, the search continues on into students' desks to see who accidentally carried the pencil from the tray to their desk, so now ALL learning has ceased & desisted for a treasure hunt for missing pencils.
Been there. Done that.
So, now I have different colors for different trays.
Oh yes, and duct tape is way cheaper than buying the cute pencils that need constant replacing.
Thanks to Mrs. P for the helpful hint, I hope this will work for our class & yours!
I'm off to finish up some units as I play hooky the rest of the day!
